GPS guides Norwegian tourists into trouble in Rio

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Three Norwegian tourists came under fire and one was shot after the satellite navigation system in their car guided them straight into one of Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous slums.

The three men cut short their vacation in Brazil and headed home Monday after Trygve Killingtveit, 24, was shot in the shoulder by suspected drug traffickers from one of the gangs that control hundreds of shantytowns in Rio.

Money as Debt

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

A friend of mine (Waldemar for those of you who know him) just sent me
this link to a video about the REAL nature of money and debt and it
goes a long way to explain the current economical crisis we are in but
the video was made in 2006.

The blurb says this: “Paul Grignon’s 47-minute animated presentation
of “Money as Debt” tells in very simple and effective graphic terms
what money is and how it is being created. It is an entertaining way
to get the message out. It as a painless but hard-hitting educational
tool and encourage the widest distribution and use by all groups
concerned with the present unsustainable monetary system in Canada and
the United States”

I have watched it and if it is only half true it is a real eye opener!

Unknown score written by Mozart found in France

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

A French municipal library has discovered a musical score handwritten by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in its archives, the Nantes town hall said on Thursday.

The one-page work, donated to the town by a private collector at the end of the 19th century, was until recently thought to be a copy rather than an original.

The unpublished score, measuring 16 cm by 29 cm (6.5 by 11.5 inches), is thought to have been written around 1787, according to an expert musicologist from the Mozarteum university in the composer’s native city of Salzburg in Austria.

The world’s oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday Thursday in southern Japan, telling reporters he wants to live another five years.

Tomoji Tanabe, who was born Sept. 18, 1895, received birthday gifts, flowers and $1,000 cash from the mayor of his hometown of Miyakonojo, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu.

Tanabe told reporters he wants to live “another five years or so,” according to city spokesman Akihide Yokoyama. That was a slight downgrade from last year, when he said he wanted to live “for infinity.”

Rover, call me an ambulance — dog calls 911 - Yahoo! News

Monday, September 15th, 2008

“Man’s best friend” doesn’t go far enough for Buddy — a German shepherd who remembered his training and saved his owner’s life by calling 911 when the man had a seizure.

And it’s not the first time Buddy has been there for owner Joe Stalnaker, a police officer said Sunday.

On a recording of the 911 call Wednesday, Buddy is heard whimpering and barking after the dispatcher answers and repeatedly asks if the caller needs help.

“Hello, this is 911. Hello … Can you hear me? Is there somebody there you can give the phone to,” says the dispatcher, Chris Trott.

Police were sent to Stalnaker’s home, and after about three minutes Buddy is heard barking loudly when the officers arrived.

Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said Stalnaker spent two days in a hospital and recovered from the seizure.

Reuters - A specialist armed police officer is
facing investigation after leaving a loaded gun in a Starbucks
cafe in central London, police said on Thursday.

The unnamed officer, who the Sun newspaper said provided personal protection for Middle East peace envoy Tony Blair, forgot the weapon after she visited the coffee house last week.

“A police issue firearm was left unattended in a central London cafe on Friday evening and was found by a member of the public,” a Metropolitan Police (MPS) spokeswoman said.

“The weapon belongs to an MPS authorised firearms officer who was on duty at the time. An investigation has begun.”

Returning firefighters find own station ablaze (AP)

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

The De Queen fire station is closed on weekends, so when a call is received the firefighters go to the station to get their gear before heading out.

But when they gathered at the station Saturday to answer a call about a burning utility pole, they discovered they had another problem on their hands.

“One of the firemen called me and said the place was full of smoke. I thought he was joshing me. He said ‘We’ve got a fire at the fire station,’” De Queen Fire Marshal Dennis Pruitt said.
